As industry folks is very important to stay up to date with the latest technology and while AI often dominates the conversation, there are plenty of other tools revolutionizing the industry.
Let's look into Virtual Production & LED Walls.

Virtual Production & LED Walls
VP combines real-time computer-generated (CG) environments with physical sets. Instead of using traditional green screens, filmmakers now rely on LED walls; these are massive, high-resolution screens that display dynamic backgrounds in real-time. It allows actors to perform in immersive digital environments while cameras capture everything, significantly reducing the need for post-production compositing. Some companies currently using this technology include Disney (The Mandalorian), Marvel, Netflix, among others.

How it works:
  1. Game Engine Integration: Virtual environments are created using real-time rendering engines like Unreal Engine, allowing directors to adjust lighting, angles, and backgrounds.
  2. LED Volume Stages: These are enormous LED panels that form a 360-degree or semi-enclosed space, displaying photorealistic backgrounds that move with the camera using camera tracking technology.
  3. Real-Time Adjustments: Unlike traditional VFX, set designs, lighting, and weather conditions can be modified instantly, offering flexibility on set.
Why it’s a game-changer:
  1. Realistic Lighting & Reflections: Unlike green screens, LED walls naturally cast light onto actors and props, making the scene feel more authentic.
  2. Faster Production & Cost Savings: Reduces the need for expensive location shoots and post-production VFX work.
  3. Improved Performances: Actors can react to real environments instead of imagining their surroundings in front of a green screen.
  4. Sustainability: Fewer physical sets and travel requirements make it an eco-friendlier option for productions.
